Everything you need to know about Firefox 3.5

Mozilla recently released the second release candidate of Firefox 3.5 and is due to launch the final version before the end of the month. Here's your one-stop guide to the key new features in the latest version. Mozilla is adamant that 3.5 offers significant speed improvements. Hardly surprising, but Mozilla claims that 3.5 is up to 10 times faster than Firefox 2 and twice as fast as Firefox 3.0. "Websites should feel snappier and complex websites should be able to do more things, " says Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's Director of Firefox Development.

Microsoft: Free Antivirus, Addresses Fake

11 June 2009 (tomsguide.com)

While Microsoft is busy going after a fake antivirus program through its Malicious

Software Removal Tool

, the company plans to launch a free anti-virus service in the immediate future. Microsoft is currently testing an early version of the anti-virus product internally with company employees, however there are plans to make a public beta available on the Microsoft website. The move to provide a free anti-virus product puts Microsoft on the map as a rival to

Symantec

and

McAfee

. However, the move may also spark more antitrust controversy for Microsoft, seen as means of dominating another aspect of the PC market.

BumpTop: Software toy or useful desktop replacement?

8 April 2009 (cnet.com)

Nearly three years ago, a video demo of a new desktop user interface, the BumpTop, captivated YouTube viewers. A year later the creator, Anand Agarawala, was called to the august TED conference to present. Now the BumpTop software is here, ready for you and your Windows PC. I gave it a spin. It's certainly very cool. In many ways it is a better desktop than the one that comes with Windows (even Windows 7) or OS X. But as cool as it is, it feels like a toy. That's because the locus of modern personal computing is not the desktop. People live in apps and in the browser. BumpTop makes the desktop better, but so what? It won't make you more productive in your e-mail app, and it currently doesn't touch the Web browsing experience. BumpTop doesn't go deep enough into Windows to replace the way we work with information. Instead, it adds yet another interface to use in addition to the Windows utilities (like the file manager), your apps, and your Web browser.

Ten reasons why Linux will oust Windows

3 April 2009 (zdnet.co.uk)

Despite the positive buzz generated by Windows 7, it is only a matter of time before Linux takes its rightful place at the top of the operating-system pile, says Jack Wallen. Microsoft's failings are finally catching up with it and will cause the once-unstoppable juggernaut to cede to Linux. A key event was 14 September, 2000, when Microsoft set a tiny snowball rolling with the release of the deeply flawed Windows Me. That snowball has been gaining momentum, despite some ups and downs along the way — XP was an up, for example. In many respects, the public mood has already shifted against the operating system that was once considered the heart of personal computing. Here are 10 reasons why that shift has taken place:

Computer Program Self-Discovers Laws of Physics

3 April 2009 (wired.com)

In just over a day, a

powerful computer program

accomplished a feat that took physicists centuries to complete: extrapolating the laws of motion from a pendulum's swings. Developed by Cornell researchers, the program deduced the natural laws without a shred of knowledge about physics or geometry. The research is being heralded as a potential breakthrough for science in the Petabyte Age, where computers try to find regularities in massive datasets that are too big and complex for the human mind. (See Wired magazine's July 2008 cover story on "The End of Science.")

Hands On: Demigod's Addictive Strategy Gameplay Apes Warcraft

20 March 2009 (wired.com)

When Gas Powered Games' new PC strategy game Demigod is released next month, WarCraft fans are going to find the gameplay pleasantly familiar. Though I wouldn't go so far as to say it blatantly rips off the popular WarCraft III mod Defense of the Ancients, the similarities make it impossible to discuss Demigod without mentioning its inspiration. Not only does Demigod mimic the concept of using heroic avatars to lead armies (calling them "demigods" instead of "heroes"), the overall feel of combat and gameplay in the newer game is so inherently similar to its predecessor as to be instantly recognizable to those gamers who have experienced both. The big question now is if Demigod's graphical upgrade and handful of gameplay changes can prove enough of a draw for gamers when its primary competition is a free add-on download.

How To Do Data Mining

Data mining is a labor intensive job wherein a lot of data has to be collected and analyzed. Outsourcing data mining jobs may be more beneficial to companies who do not have the time or manpower to invest in this endeavor. The outsourcing company will take care of collecting the needed data and organizing the data in a well mapped database so that they can easily filter or extract the required information for analysis. But if you have the resources, you can also use a variety of data mining programs out there. Some data mining software are SAS Enterprise Miner, DataDetective, Statistical Data Miner, Statistica, and Weka.

Creating Pivot Table Reports

Pivot Table reports are data summarization tools that are found in programs involving data visualization such as spreadsheets. Examples are Lotus, Open Office, and Microsoft excel. They can automatically count and sort the data that is stored in a spreadsheet or in one table. The program quickly creates cross tabs which save you from the trouble of making these manually. As the user, you can set these up and change the summary structure by dragging and then dropping the fields on the pivot table rows. The rotation makes it pivot and the summary table gets the concept of its name behind that action. This explains how this particular report got its name.

Blog Optimization

Search engine optimization is the process done to generate traffic through search engines. It became a need for websites because 80%-90% of visitors come from major search engines. Higher rankings mean greater number of visitors. The same concept applies to blogs. However, many blog owners are not aware of their chances of being more visible on the web. They just update it once in a while and that's it. Considering the great number of blogs on the net today, from personal to corporate blogs, all their efforts will just go to waste if they do not optimize it.

Motion Control Comes to Nintendo DSi

Like HD 3D, tablets, and e-readers, motion sensing technology has been a frequented topic of late thanks to a spark ignited by Nintendo's Wii console. Sony and Microsoft both are catching on and offering solutions this year; Razer follows suit by offering motion sensing control to PC gaming in 2010 as well. And what of portable gaming? That seemed out of the question... or so we thought.

Apparently Netherlands-based game developer Engine Software is working on motion sensitivity for the Nintendo DSi. According to Joystiq, the technology takes advantage of the handheld console's camera in order to achieve the tracking of motion.

History of shareware

Jim Button, the creator of PC-File - a database program, and Andrew Fluegleman, the author of PC-Talk - a communication program, are considered to be the "fathers" of the shareware concept. Though they didn't know each other, when they found out that they used the same method of software distribution, they decided to promote each other's software.

Their intention was at first to share free software with other users. In time, they realized that they couldn't afford to develop the software and to inform users on new features. So they continued to allow users to copy their software, but they introduced a line in the program requesting 20 dollars for financing the development of the programs.

Video Conferencing Software

Video conferencing software are applications installed on computers that enable a person to view the video of the person whom he is connected to. This is known as video conferencing, and it is the latest technology used in most companies for effective and real-time communication. This software allows two or more individuals to connect in a single conference video-call.

There are many complicated video conferencing software available whose installation and use can be quite expensive. However, there are some free software which provide the same features as the expensive ones, and can easily be downloaded from the Internet. Such software are primarily beneficial and convenient for smaller companies. They are not suitable for large companies due to their technical limitations.

Boom time for cybercrime

One in five online consumers were victims of a cybercrime in the past two years, according to the latest Consumer Reports State of the Net survey. That means there's a strong possibility that your money will be added to the $8 billion we estimate cybercrime cost consumers or that your computer will join the 1.2 million others that we figure were replaced because of software infections during that time.

The overall rate of cybercrime hasn't declined much over the five years we've tracked it. Crooks continue to take advantage of new technologies. And consumers, corporations, and the government haven't done all they could for protection.
