that tracks where all of your friends are and what they're doing. "I'll pull it out on the ride in from the airport, and before I've even gotten to the city I'll have figured out who's nearby me, and we'll be making plans to get together that night," Altman told me. If he looks on his phone's map on a Saturday night, he can literally see groups forming in real time. "It's getting to the point now where if you want do something social, you have all this information about the world around you," he says. Location-based applications are quickly becoming the hot new thing on phones. Since many mobiles today — most particularly the

iPhone

— can determine their location via GPS chips (or pinging local cell towers and WiFi signals), they're spawning a whole new ecosystem of apps. There are social ones like Loopt or foursquare, which track the movement of friends as well as find-stuff tools like Yelp that locate top-rated bars and restaurants near you. According to web-research firm Compete, one in three mobile-phone owners uses location-based tools, and the number of apps has exploded from 500 to 2,500 since last October.

Having already given you the AT&T spec sheet and images on this new Nokia, the only things missing are launch date, price, and a bit of video. Well, a janky QIK video just made its way to YouTube claiming that Nokia's Mako is coming to AT&T in mid-July as the 6790 Surge. It should be "priced pretty well" but those details haven't been finalized. So if a quick messaging device running S60 beneath a 2.4-inch 240x320 pixel display with HSDPA data and 2 megapixel camera is enough motivation to prompt another mouse-click then by all means, click through for the video overview provided after the break. Two iPhone developers are touting a million downloads of their respective apps, with one becoming the first paid

Freeverse has announced that its Flick Fishing game has become the first paid application to reach the million download milestone, with the one millionth copy being sold over the weekend. In addition, nearly 10% of users have made in-app purchases of a new fishing location and new fish since the feature came online last week. Online movie ticketing service Fandango has also announced that its application for the iPhone and iPod touch has been downloaded one million times since its launch on March 13.

How AT&T Stumbled Through the iPhone 3GS Launch

Over the weekend Apple waltzed through the latest iPhone launch, while its partner AT&T tripped and stumbled like a dance-school dropout. Perhaps AT&T didn’t feel the need to smooth its moves, because in three days Apple sold over a million iPhone 3GS units worldwide anyway. But in a surprising move, Apple two weeks ago pointed the harsh spotlight of scrutiny on its partner at the Worldwide Developers Conference by announcing that multimedia messaging and tethering on the

iPhone

would be immediately available for customers with several international carriers — but not for AT&T customers. As if the chorus of “boos” in the audience weren’t enough, AT&T soon after came under heavy fire when customers learned about an early-adoption fee — an extra $200 that iPhone 3G users would have to pay to upgrade to the latest iPhone 3GS handset. While AT&T has addressed both the lack of MMS (it’s coming, the company says) and the early-adoption fee (AT&T later offered the fully-subsidized new-customer price to a larger number of current customers), these are just two of the company’s many missteps around the iPhone 3GS launch.

owners who want to upgrade to the new model. She said, “Spread the word: You’re angry about the roll-out of the new iPhone, which makes current users second-class citizens.” Ms. Galant feels sucker-punched by Apple, which sent her a promotional e-mail luring her with the video capabilities of the new phone of the $199 price. She took the bait, only to see the price jump to $399 because she hadn’t finished her two-year contract. But the policies that Apple has worked out with AT&T may be far more consumer-friendly than average for the cellphone industry. As I’ve written before, in today’s world you don’t so much buy technology products as subscribe to them. And Apple’s iPhone pricing makes that especially clear.

iPhone 3GS price plan angers hardcore fans

The new iPhone 3GS, announced yesterday, has already managed to upset a core group of fans: the early adopters who have bought each new model at launch. O2, the only network on which the

iPhone

is available, has said that existing iPhone owners will not be able to upgrade to the new phone until their contracts have expired. Since iPhone contracts last at least 18 months, that could leave them with a long wait. After the last upgrade, O2 let existing iPhone owners step up to the new 3G phone as long as they took out a new 18-month contract. O2 says that this was because the original iPhone was not subsidised by the network. True iPhone enthusiasts can buy themselves out of their contracts, but that would cost at least £30 per month for the rest of the contract period, on top of the cost of the new phone. The 16GB iPhone 3GS is £184.98 on 18-month contracts up to £35, while its bigger brother, which comes with 32GB of memory, is £274.23.

Vandals take down Internet, emergency, and voice services in California

is as easy as crawling down a few strategically located manholes and hacking through some fiber optic cables. Police in California suspect exactly that after "vandals" cut a total of 10 fiber optic cables (each containing between 48 and 360 fibers) at 4 locations on Thursday morning. The AT&T and Sprint cables knocked "tens of thousands" of San Francisco, Bay Area residents off the grid including an additional 52,000 Verizon landline and

wireless

customers. San Jose spokesman, Sgt. Ronnie Lopez, says that Vandals somehow managed to thwart the safeguards securing this important element of the US infrastructure.

HTC Touch Diamond2 hitting Taiwan this month

Apple orders 100 million 8Gb flash chips in ramp up for new device(s)?

Oh Apple, what are you up to? Just like we saw right around this time last year in preparation for Apple's new iPhone 3G and updated iPod touch, Apple is placing huge orders of NAND chips thereby threatening the supply in demand by other tier-one vendors. This time we've got DigiTimes confirming earlier reports that Apple is cornering the market on flash memory -- specifically, the Taiwanese rumor rag is reporting orders of "100 million 8Gb (8 gigabit, not gigabyte) NAND flash chips mostly with Samsung Electronics." That's twice the size of the order reported last year. The tiny memory chips are then recombined during manufacturing into the larger 16GB, 32GB, and so on capacities we expect to find in our handheld consumer electronics. Anyone still doubting new Apple handhelds in June?

RIM (employee): Storm 2 with "new approach to text entry" for end 2009, early 2010

Reputable Dutch site Tweakers has Alain Segond von Banchet, RIM channel sales manager according to LinkedIn, stating that the BlackBerry Storm followup is scheduled to launch at the end of the year or at the beginning of next. In addition, he has the phone coming to KPN, not Vodafone who had the first generation Storm locked-up under an exclusive deal. Interestingly enough, Mr. Segond von Banchet says that the Storm 2 (not the final name) will "offer among other things a new manner to input text" -- among other things meaning WiFi, presumably, as we heard before. Keep in mind that channel sales managers do not typically represent a company to the press. Nevertheless, what he's saying does jibe with previous rumors and we have no doubt that RIM is working hard to avoid the universal disdain that greeted the Storm's mushy, push-button touchscreen input.

HTC Snap coming to T-Mobile sans Inner Circle?

So the juicy part of this rumor has to be the fact that T-Mobile could get a branded version of the lovely HTC Snap (or rather the US-specific S522, which doesn't carry the Snap name), a belief based on a leaked ROM rife with references to the carrier's name and logo. Of course, seeing how T-Mobile was HTC's partner on the Excalibur / Dash, it makes a lot of sense that they'd want to carry on the portrait QWERTY tradition there with an updated model, which is precisely where the S522 fits into the puzzle. This is where it gets weird, though: the ROM apparently has wiped all references to Inner Circle, HTC's software tweak that lets you selectively filter out emails from anyone not on your whitelist. Why they'd want to get rid of it is unclear since it wouldn't seem to affect carrier revenue in any way, so we're holding out hope that it'll reappear by the time the device ships -- if this rumor even ends up checking out, that is.

is now available in the US iTunes store, free of charge. We've heard great thing from the folks in Japan who've been fiddling with it for the last twelve hours, and so far it's sounding pretty good for us, too, with only minor hiccups. Not sure if it's a glitch, but despite what we heard earlier, we seem to be able to dial out while on 3G and not over WiFi (at least running OS 3.0 beta). The Pre, Palm's ridiculously slick new mobile phone, stole the show at CES this year. Good looks helped, but mainly it was the Pre's iPhone-like touchscreen technology that wowed the industry crowd. Sure, the Pre has a built-in keyboard, but all anyone wanted to do was drag their fingers along the screen and make magic happen: pop windows open, scroll through sites, fling the contact list to the bottom of the display. The gestures were intuitive, fun, and basically copies of Apple's. Anytime a new product is a success, you see a whole bunch of “me too” products in the months after. If the original manufacturer is making buckets of money from one device, every other company under the sun wants to get in on it. It happened with netbooks and it happened with smartphones. A software company could potentially lose more than half a million dollars because of an iPhone app that Apple has ignored for six months. Eric Thomas, CEO of FreedomVoice Systems, told staff this week that the company is ceasing indefinitely any work on an iPhone voice app, called Newber, because Apple will neither accept it nor reject it. FreedomVoice has so far invested $600,000 and more than half a year in the app. We followed all guidelines set by Apple throughout the development process and have never received comment from Apple as to why the Newber application has still not even been reviewed," Thomas wrote in a letter to FreedomVoice staff, provided to Wired.com. "Steve Jobs hailed the App Store as, 'the best deal going to distribute applications to mobile platforms.' Our experience is that it is the worst deal going.

BlackBerry Store Sets $3 Minimum for Applications

A BlackBerry app store has been long in coming and now it looks like BlackBerry users will have to pay more than their iPhone and G1-using friends, too. The BlackBerry App store, App World, hasn't launched yet, but maker Research in Motion has been slowly releasing details about how it will work. While developers will be able to give away apps for free, RIM has set a minimum price for the for-fee apps at $3.

Nokia to lay off 1,700 workers

Nokia is to lay off approximately 1,700 staff around the globe, the handset manufacturer said on Tuesday. The cuts follow a marked drop in profitability at Nokia which, like its rivals, is feeling the effects of the global economic downturn. In a statement, Nokia said staff would be laid off in its devices and markets units, as well as in its corporate-development office and global-support functions.
