An Unlikely Savior Emerges for the Penguins

11 June 2009 (nytimes.com)

PITTSBURGH — Rob Scuderi is not normally viewed as one of hockey’s top defensemen, but in Pittsburgh’s thrilling Game 6 victory in the Stanley Cup finals, it was Scuderi who repeatedly saved the Penguins’ season with brilliant plays that staved off the Red Wings.
Because of him, the Penguins are alive to play Game 7 in Detroit on Friday.
“It was just us trying to do whatever we can to stop the puck,” Scuderi said.
With less than 20 seconds left in Game 6 and his team leading, 2-1, Scuderi found himself alone in the goal crease with Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury out of the play and the Red Wings bearing down on the net. Scuderi knelt and stopped Johan Franzen’s shot, then leaned over and covered the puck as Franzen repeatedly tried to stuff it in. The referees decided Scuderi did not cover the puck with his hand, which would have been a penalty shot.

Fatigue Enters the Finals as Bryant’s Minutes Add Up

11 June 2009 (nytimes.com)

Though not as detectable in his late-game legs, determination was painted on Kobe Bryant’s face. He was hungry — ravenous, even — to take the competitive life out of the N.B.A. finals, just not spry enough to slip past Superman on the defining Lakers possession of Game 3. Orlando’s franchise player, Dwight Howard, was not actually caped in his crusade to win a finals game for a franchise that had an 0-6 record between here and its previous appearance in 1995. But Howard was a well-studied man of steal, claiming he anticipated Bryant’s “little in-and-out move” as Bryant overzealously responded to a moment of opportunity and foolishly tried to split two defenders with the rallying Lakers trailing, 104-102, approaching a half-minute to play.

Wang Again Appears Lost as Red Sox Surge Ahead in the Division

BOSTON — They have already tried the disabled list, the minor leagues and the bullpen in their search for the old Chien-Ming Wang. Nothing has helped. The Yankees are missing their former ace, who regressed in another loss to the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday. The Yankees have lost all seven games they have played against the Red Sox this season, the latest by 6-5 at Fenway Park. Wang faced 17 hitters, retiring eight and allowing nine to reach base. He looked nothing like the pitcher who fired a two-hit complete game here in April 2008, and the Yankees do not know if he will make his next start.

South Africa recorded a one-run victory over New Zealand in the final match of Group D in the World Twenty20.

10 June 2009 (news.bbc.co.uk)

With both sides already through to the next phase, Jacques Kallis shared an opening stand of 49 with Graeme Smith but South Africa were limited to 128-7. Acting captain Brendon McCullum hit six fours in his 57 off 54 balls in reply and looked to be leading his side home. But spinner Roelof van der Merwe took 2-14, the Kiwis slipped behind and were unable to make 15 from the final over. The South Africans have been widely tipped to lift the trophy but produced a curious batting performance having been put in on a chilly, overcast evening at the home of cricket.

The teams' umbrella group (Fota) and the FIA are in talks aimed at reaching a compromise over the disagreement. The two parties have been in dispute over plans for a budget cap and the future of the sport. Sources say negotiations are at a "delicate stage" but both sides are hopeful of reaching an agreement. Fota have responded to a letter from FIA president Max Mosley after he urged them to this week submit an unconditional entry for next year.

Magic bounce back in NBA Finals

10 June 2009 (news.bbc.co.uk)

Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis each scored 21 points as Orlando defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 108-104 to trail 2-1 in the best-of-seven NBA Finals. Lakers star Kobe Bryant looked set to continue his dominance of the series with 17 points in the opening quarter. But he went on to hit only 11 of 25 shots, missed five of his 10 free-throw attempts and committed four turnovers. Bryant also fouled Mickael Pietrus, who then sank the game-clinching free-throws to give the Magic hope. Game four also takes place in Florida, on Thursday, as the Magic look to become only the fourth team to recover from 2-0 down to win the finals. And Howard believes the Magic can do just that. "We didn't allow being down 0-2 to discourage us from winning," he said.

Manny Ramirez Is Banned for 50 Games

8 May 2009 (nytimes.com)

When Major League Baseball officials examined the results of urine tests from the slugger Manny Ramirez earlier this season, they became suspicious. Although the tests did not show clear evidence of a performance-enhancing drug, there were traces of banned substances, enough to initiate an investigation that has left one of baseball’s greatest hitters with a 50-game suspension.

Nearly 30 major leaguers have been suspended for using performance-enhancers since players began penalty testing in 2004, and Ramirez is now the biggest of those names. And unlike many or all of the others who were suspended, Ramirez was ultimately tripped up by medical files that were handed over to baseball officials as the case proceeded.

Olympic 2012 village seeks £225m bailout from European Investment Bank

10 April 2009 (guardian.co.uk)

Olympic planners have been forced to seek public sector support to bail out a £1bn athletes' village project in east London, after a collapse in interest from private investors. The European Investment Bank, set up as a development arm of the European Union, has approved a request for a £225m loan toward the scheme - which may yet require another £400m in direct government support unless financial conditions improve. The government had hoped that the private sector would raise the bulk of the £1bn needed to build the Olympic Village, made up of about 3,000 athletes flats in Stratford. But funding has dried up in the wake of the credit crunch and collapse in property values. About half the flats will be converted into social housing after the games.

Kallis, De Villiers steer South Africa home

10 April 2009 (cnn.com)

Half-centuries from Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers proved decisive as South Africa eased to a 25-run victory over Australia in the third one-day cricket international in Cape Town. Kallis and De Villiers shared a 114-run partnership for the third wicket to rescue the home side from early trouble to post 289 for six. The tourists struggled in their chase, with Callum Ferguson (63) and James Hopes (63 not out) only briefly threatening as outstanding fielding and Roelof van der Merwe's three for 37 restricted them to 264 for seven.

The Indians were the first American League team to install an alt-energy power source in 2007, making it a member of the growing number of ball clubs whose stadiums are going green.

Manchester United's late lapse against Porto plunges them into the danger zone

8 April 2009 (guardian.co.uk)

An 89th-minute equaliser horrified Old Trafford when it seemed Manchester United had fought back to win. The deeper distress lies in the knowledge that Sir Alex Ferguson's side is wavering at the critical phase of the season. The Champions League holders now face a challenge fit for a club with grand ambitions. Porto have never been beaten at home by an English club in European competition and it looks likely that a win at the Dragao Stadium will be necessary for United. On this evidence they are in no shape to pull off such a feat. Indeed, a draw barely did justice to visitors who were sharper, livelier and superior in all aspects.

American stadium design has been stuck in a nostalgic funk, with sports franchises recycling the same old images year after year. Still, if you have to go with a retro look, New York City could have done worse than the new Yankee Stadium and Citi Field. Both were designed by Populous (formerly known as HOK Sport Venue Event) and are major upgrades over the stadiums they replaced, which had been looking more and more dilapidated over the years. Both should be fine places to spend a few hours watching a game.

NBA names changes too many men rule

27 march 2009 (mahalo.com)

The National Basketball Association is comprised of 30 professional teams playing basketball in the United States and Canada. On March 26, 2009, the league changed the rule for having too many player on the court. Under the new policy, if a technical foul is given for too many men, the non-offending team has the choice to keep the previous play or void the action and revert the game clock.

History

Originally founded as the Basketball Association of America on June 6, 1946, with 11 teams. The first game was played on November 1, 1946, in Toronto where the New York Knickerbockers defeated the Toronto Huskies 68-66. In 1949, the Basketball Association of America merged with the National Basketball League, forming the NBA. The league first started with 17 teams, then cut the league to 11 teams the following year. In 1976 the NBA absorbed four teams from the struggling American Basketball Association. The fall of the ABA was satirized in the 2008 Will Ferrell film Semi-Pro.

Time is running out. Outside of the ACC, he’s scarcely known. Despite finishing runner-up to North Carolina’s Tyler Hansbrough as conference player of the year. Despite earning honors as the conference’s defensive player of the year. Despite playing so well earlier this season, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said Douglas was “probably the best player in our league.”

A day hike is a two-pronged activity. First, it promises to provide you a great physical work out. Second, it gives you the chance to explore trails and view scenic wonders.

Select your destination. If you are a beginner, you may want to start aiming for the recreation areas in your local county or regional area. Most probably, the topography there is more familiar to you. Useful information could be found on the Internet. Check out the State Park and the National Park websites for possible destinations. You may also join some local mountain-hiking clubs to guide you with your trekking adventure. Participating in their discussion groups would definitely provide you with more practical pointers.

Get a detailed map. Once you have chosen your particular destination, familiarize yourself with the area. Get a trail map to find out what is ahead of your trip. On the net, Map Quest is a reliable site to guide you in your hiking odyssey. Don’t forget to print your maps.

Disc Golf

Disc golf started with the people who used Frisbee discs to aim at targets like trees, pipes, poles or any other target that was handy. Frisbee is a trademark of a company that manufactures toys and discs and not the name of a sport. However, it is strange that this company does not manufacture much of these discs. Disc golf is very similar to that of regular golf. Instead of using the golf-clubs and golf balls for playing, these discs are used to play disc golf. Also, the golf players do not aim for the golf poles, but they aim for the poles that have a basket that is tied to the pole with chains. The disc lands in the basket that is attached to the pole. It is not compulsory that the game of disc golf must be played on a lawn; Any terrain can be used to play disc golf. Apart from these rules, disc golf is one of the best fitness sport that can be played by any age group.

What is Pass Catch Shoot ?

As with any sport, basketball requires meticulous practice in order to master the maneuvers inherent in playing well and winning the game. Yet, with the team nature of basketball, it can be quite difficult for aspiring athletes to practice on their own, since offensive and defensive opponents play such an integral part in basketball technique.

Recognizing the potential for a basketball training aid that allows individual players to hone offensive skills, Mr. Robert Johnson has conceived of a sick new product invention he has aptly designated the Pass Catch Shoot or PCS. Simply stated, the PCS is an upright, adjustable device that serves to simulate a defensive player when practicing. Simulating the shape of a person when assembled, this product would basically consist of series aluminum tubing, with each component featuring assemblies to facilitate adjustment.

Olympics Opens Doors to Women's Boxing

The International Olympic Committee said today that women's boxing would be included in the Olympic games for the first time in 2012.

The decision, announced by the IOC president, Jacques Rogge, following a meeting of the executive board in Berlin, means that the Olympics in London will be the first to feature women and men competing in all of the sports.

Women will be able to box alongside men for the first time since the activity was included as a demonstration sport in 1904. Savannah Marshall and Nicola Adams are two of the British female boxers who could now become household names.

Despite its history dating back to the 1720s, women's boxing has never been included in the full Olympic program. Today's change has been hailed by boxing authorities, who said concerns about competitiveness and health issues had been disproved once and for all.

Day 2 of the British Open

Steve Marino can thank his dad for making sure he got to the British Open.
Marino, a 29-year-old American who scuffled to qualify for the PGA Tour, looked right at home at Turnberry with a 2-under 68 Friday -- an impressive score in windy conditions that put some bite in the ol' course.
He was one stroke behind Japan's Kenichi Kuboya, while first-round contenders such as Ben Curtis and Miguel Angel Jimenez tumbled down the leaderboard when the gusts whipping off the Firth of Clyde sent scores soaring.
