Conductor Embraces His New York Moment

7 August 2009 (nytimes.com)

If the fast-rising French-Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin was at all nervous about making his New York debut with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall on Tuesday night, he did not show it. This concert was one of the most anticipated of the summer season. Mr. Nézet-Séguin (pronounced nay-ZAY say-GHEN) can hardly keep pace with the invitations coming his way from orchestras around the world. That at 34 he had still not performed in New York was just a career quirk, and he embraced the moment, earning an immediate standing ovation. And this in a program that had only one crowd pleaser: Mendelssohn's “Italian” Symphony.

A Trio Turns Back to Making Jazz, Not Firewood

10 April 2009 (nytimes.com)

Jeff Ballard and Larry Grenadier were in Europe last fall, on tour with the Brad Mehldau Trio, when they got the horrific news. Mark Turner, their partner in the dynamic post-bop band Fly, had sliced through two fingers of his left hand with a power saw while cutting firewood, severing nerves and tendons. Though typically low-key about his injury at the time — “I had an accident,” he wrote his band mates by e-mail — it was uncertain whether Mr. Turner, among the top tenor saxophonists of his generation, would ever be able to play again.

Original Beatles Albums to Be Reissued

8 April 2009 (nytimes.com)

Finally. After watching the Beatles’ company, Apple Corps, devote the last few years to developing a site-specific show in Las Vegas, a video game and a line of pricey memorabilia, Beatles fans are finally getting something they’ve been demanding for at least the last decade: sonically upgraded reissues of the group’s original British albums, in stereo and mono. Apple Corps and EMI announced on Tuesday that the much-postponed remasters would be released on individual stereo CDs and in two boxed sets — one stereo, the other mono — on Sept. 9, the same day the Beatles edition of Rock Band, the music video game, is scheduled for release.

Fred Durst and Neil Diamond ... blame Twitter for this musical match-up. Photograph: Graham Whitby-Boot/Matt Cardy/Allstar/Getty Neil Diamond and Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst are, er, tweeting. The travesty began when Diamond, singer-songwriter extraordinaire, suggested some books to fans on his official Twitter account. "2 book recommendations," he wrote. "Going Deep by Gary Smith – inspirational sports stories & The Soul of Nature by Herb Cohen – deep and fascinating." While most of Diamond's Twitter followers – and there are almost 7,000 of them – were busy reaching for their library cards, one particular fan sent him a message.

Gameboyz in the Hood: Test Your Gadget Street Cred

3 April 2009 (wired.com)

Long before nerdcore MCs established a niche by name-checking gear as geeky as the Commodore 64, hip hop artists were stocking their rhymes with more gadgets than a Best Buy. We submit: Back in 1988, Ice Cube bragged about his "little bit of gold and a pager" in N.W.A.'s "Fuck Tha Police." In 1991, De La Soul screened booty calls via answering machine in "Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)." In 1998, Tupac claimed that his foes were jealous of his mobile phone in "Changes." And there's plenty more where that came from. Test your street cred by selecting the right device to complete the lyrics below.

Creating A Sizzling Music Album

If you have decided that you will be creating your music album then you definitely need to be aware of the financial constraints that you might have to face. The only reason why many singers fail to create an entire music CD is because they are not able to bring in so much funds especially if they have just stepped into this field. However, when you are determined to bring in some change and introduce and make yourself popular amongst people, then you should think of spending some money. Obviously, this like an investment, if you invest some money only then will you be able to reap a return out of that.

Music albums are mainly recorded in music studios. Music studios are usually present in most towns and cities. Each music studio has its own characteristics and will help promote your music album in their own way. Some of these music studios have links to radio stations while some have links to the film industry as well. In this way you can also get a chance of meeting clients.

What does it mean when the Church sings?

The serious study of the liturgical music of the Catholic Church namely Gregorian Chant, polyphony and those modern forms of music that are consonant with the Churchs liturgical spirit and tradition is of utmost importance in the education of a Church musician.

Catholic musicians must revere the treasury of sacred liturgical music. As the philosopher Dietrich von Hildebrand observed, we should fear to abandon the prayers and postures and music that have been approved by so many saints throughout the Christian era and delivered to us as a precious heritage. The illusion that we can replace the Gregorian chant, with its inspired hymns and rhythms betrays a ridiculous self-assurance and lack of knowledge.

The constant teaching of the Magisterium, underlined in the teaching of Vatican II, has reiterated that Catholics should receive the Sacred Liturgy, with its renowned tradition of sacred music, as food for the soul.

Easy Learning Guitar Chords

If you want to learn to play guitar chords you can buy a chord dictionary. These books contain every chord known to man, most of them you will never use. There are two common kinds or chord - the major chord and the minor chord.

All western music is based on the major scale. Let's take a look at the C major scale: C D E F G A B C. On the piano these are the white notes but on the guitar we have to find the note patterns and find ways of remembering them.

What is Healing Music?

If you look on the Internet or go into your nearby audio store you're likely to find music labeled Healing Music. The section may include music for relaxation, meditation, stress reduction, pain relief or tapping into one's soul. There may be a variety of instruments or sounds from a forest or the ocean.

So what makes this music healing music?

Music has a way of stirring our innermost feelings and all of our senses, of tapping into parts of ourselves unlike anything else. Music is a universal language that has the ability to speak to us deeply and uniquely.

If you've paid much attention to how you respond to a variety of music, you may have noticed that some music seems to energize you, some music can move you to tears or spark a special memory of a time, place, food, or perhaps a certain person. Some music seems to make you relax, feel less stressed, and feel happier. And some music fills us with deep spiritual attunement.
