There are a couple of important stories in The Times worth highlighting today, one on determining when an old appliance should — and should not — get the heave-ho, and one on a burst of interest in mass transit driven by high gas prices.

Why So Cold, My Proud Beauty?

28 April 2009 (nytimes.com)

EGINA SMITH noticed an unusual

refrigerator

in a friend's kitchen in Short Hills, N.J. Seven feet tall without a

freezer

— a sister unit takes care of that — it is three feet wide, and Ms. Smith couldn't help wondering why her friend had bought something so, well, supersized. "And then I realized," she recalled, "of course the pizza box had to fit."
Viking range, move over. The newest star in the kitchen is the

refrigerator

. Inspired by the success of prestige brands like Sub-Zero, and determined to make a simple box stand out in a crowd, rivals like General Electric, Electrolux, Jenn-Air and Thermador are introducing solutions that make the ubiquitous

ice maker

and the garden-variety produce drawer seem quaint.

So far, this is working out well. Just a couple of small complaints.

About Freezer Efficiency

Freezer efficiency depends on the size and type of freezer. Chest freezers (top loading) are 10-25 percent more efficient than uprights (front loading) because they are better insulated and air doesn't spill out when the door is opened. Manual defrost models consume 35-40 percent less energy than comparable automatic defrost ones, but periodic defrosting to keep ice build-up less than 1/4 inch is necessary to ensure energy efficiency.

Sarah's reply

Sarah! Thanks for your warmth and reminder that ‘a geologist’s weed is a biologist’s herb’. I’ll leave some Monarch food close to the fence line. Next week I really must tackle those Canadian thistles down at the lower, sandy end of the field. One bunch of steers we had munched them down, but their successors are not doing that. The only ‘weed’ I’ve succeeded in removing totally I think is burdock. I know, I know … the roots are very tasty.
Some years ago my Dad decided to replace the swamp cooler in his (now our) house with a compressor AC. It is so noisy, and the humidity in the house gets down to around 10; causing my skin to itch. In the next week or so we’re planning to have a new swamper put in, and we also intend to drive it with a brushless DC motor energized by a couple PV panels and batteries. When it’s installed and running we’ll have a celebration - and sing the Amortization Blues. First I’ll have to write some lyrics…

Avocado Refrigerator

When I lived in Holland, not very many people used dryers. Whenever we visited my parents in the States, my husband always used to ask, “Why are the towels always so soft here?”

However, they did use a device that would probably save a lot of energy in the long run — a very strong centrifuge to take most of the water out of the clothes before they were hung up to dry.

If people would use such a device BEFORE putting the clothes in the dryer, it would not take so long to tumble dry them.

Avocado Refrigerators

Well, I just paid $4.35 a gallon for unleaded at my local gas station. I put $20.00 bucks in to avoid running out for a quick trip and my gas gauge moved 1/987th of an inch. With the projections we’ll soon be paying $5.00 a gallon by summer, in my little town at least, I suspect it will happen by Memorial Day in which case I’ll be going nowhere. I weigh very carefully what I do anymore. High gas prices have impacted my life seriously.
And with appliances, my concern and befuddlement is what to do with the old appliances? If they’re old and energy inefficient, what sense would it make to donate them to a non profit, for instance? I asked this once about my truck, as we replace old with eco friendly and innovative, what happens to the old? I just have this vision of thousands of rectangular heaps of metal showing up at the dumps.
I am all for any change that allows for less use of electricity, gas, etc., that is a given. One of the complexities of this for me, however, is how to decompos
