Asus Vows to Make Products Better Than Apple
11 June 2009 (tomshardware.co.uk)
In the world of computing,
Apple
has always been admired (or at the very least, noticed) for its design. No matter what a diehard PC may feel about
Apple
, there’s little argument that style is a big part of the company’s products’ luster. Asus is now aiming directly at Apple. Instead of competing against rival PC OEMs, the Taiwanese computer maker is looking straight at making better products than Apple. “Our goal is to provide products that are better than Apple’s,” said Jonathan Tsang, the vice chairman of Asus, in an interview with the New York Times.

Studio line is a hit. It's a drastic departure from the plain, boring enclosures that the PC maker offered for so long, and it's obviously picking up traction in the market. Hot on the heels of its ultra-small Studio XPS 13, the all new Studio 14z is aimed at the tech-savvy student and the multimedia lover alike, and just about anyone in between. Packing a spacious 500GB hard drive option and a shell that looks like a mix of a Mini 9 and Studio XPS 16, this new notebook aims to fill a noticeable void in the outfit's Studio line.

Apple responds to Microsoft's Laptop Hunters... with a Megan
14 May 2009 (engadget.com)
According to Apple, there aren't any PCs with fast processors and big screens that work without viruses, crashes or headaches. But folks, this isn't reality, this is advertising. In fact, this is
Apple's
first jab since Microsoft took off the gloves with its
Laptop
Hunters series of pokes against

3K's Windows CE-powered RazorBook 400 netbook goes half price, still won't sell
10 April 2009 (engadget.com)
Man, remember just how great of a deal this looked like when it launched at $299 in May of last year? Funny how things change so rapidly, huh? Well, it's pretty comical unless you're 3K Computers, who now has a pathetic excuse of a netbook that it can only sell by slashing the asking price from $299 to under $150. Nearly web-wide, legitimate e-tailers are selling the RazorBook 400 CE for less than half of its original MSRP, and we're not even a full year into its life cycle.

Plethora of new Acer Aspires, eMachines, Gateway laptops and netbooks unveiled in one fell swoop
8 April 2009 (engadget.com)
In addition to Timeline and the 11.6-inch Aspire One, Acer decided today to announce new laptops much in the way Nikon and other camera makers roll out their PMA lineup -- in groups of eight or more. By our count, we've got at least ten different models here. * Aspire 5935 and 8935: The 18.4-inch 8935
laptop
can output a 1080p resolution, True 5.1 channel surround sound and houses up to two HDDs totaling 1TB capacity. The 5935 meanwhile can hold just one 500GB HDD and doesn't do full HD. Both support up to 4GB DDR3 memory, biometric fingerprinting, 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, and optional WiMAX. * Aspire 3935: A 13.3-inch ultra portable with 1366 x 769 resolution LED-backlit LCD and
Intel Core 2 Duo
/ GM45 express chipset. Features built-in Wi-Fi / WiMAX, up to 4GB DDR3 RAM, biometric fingerprints, and 8 hours of use with a 8-cell battery.

Samsung 12.1-inch NC20 with VIA Nano power ready for Stateside purchase
3 April 2009 (newegg.com)
A friendly tipster has pointed us over to NewEgg where Samsung's much loved NC20 is ready for purchase and presumably delivery. Mind you, this isn't just another Atom-based netbook. This 12.1-incher is one of the first to ship Stateside with a Via Nano processor of any type, the 1.3GHz U2250 in this case. You're also looking at Via Chrome9 integrated graphics, 160GB 5400rpm disk, 1GB of DDR2 memory, and 6-cell Li-ion battery. $550 is the pre-tax price for clicking all the way through to purchase where we suspect you'll be treated to a ship date. One thing's for certain; it'll be later than March 6th.

MacBook Pro 17-inch unibody
31 march 2009 (engadget.com)
There's not much that can be said about the 17-inch version of the
MacBook
Pro that hasn't already been said about the 15-incher (and to some extent, the MacBook). Still, the big, big brother of the family has a few key differences that make it stand out from the rest of the gang. The first being its non-removable battery, built out of tech which
Apple
claims will result in groundbreaking lengths between charges. The second difference, available only as an option, is a non-glossy display -- an addition which many have pined for since Apple's full throttle decision to move to extremely high-glare screens. Are these changes compelling enough to induce users to upgrade? Will previous 17-inch fans find a slam dunk or a dud underneath the unibody exterior? Read on for the full scoop.

Laptops bring lessons, maybe even peace
06 March 2009 (cnn.com)
Earlier this year, Matt Keller sat down with officials in Afghanistan -- not to discuss troop deployments, suicide bombings or opium traffickers. He was there to talk about getting laptop computers into the hands of little girls. As Taliban insurgents continue to crack down on girls who go to school and women who dare to teach them, Keller was awestruck by the Afghan government's determination to educate all children, even if it means finding tools that allow them to intellectually grow in the privacy of their own homes.

Students to get laptop trackers
06 March 2009 (bbc.co.uk)
Students in NI will soon be able to have a tracker installed in their
laptops
free of charge by the police. It follows a series of burglaries in which laptops were stolen in the Holylands area of Belfast, where many students live. If a
computer is stolen, officers hope they will able to use the tracker to trace its movements remotely. A PSNI spokeswoman said the "greenlight to purchase the relevant software had been given". A start date for the scheme is yet to be decided upon, however the spokeswoman said it would be "sometime in the near future". She also said that, at this stage, it was impossible to say how much the initiative would cost, but that it was intended to dramatically reduce the number of student laptops being stolen.

To make the working and navigation easy with its screen, this laptop model is set equipped with a 15.4-inch (39.1 cm) WideScreen WXGA display. This is further coupled by the Bright view feature that takes off the strain from one’s eyes when set to work for long hours. Additionally, the wide screen favors opening up of two pages side by side that saves time otherwise spend in shuffling the pages and checking out information from two web sources at a single point of time.
