Ex-Apple Executive Who Led Its iPod Division Is Named Chief of Palm

Jonathan Rubinstein, a former Apple executive behind its iPod, was named chief executive of the smartphone maker Palm on Wednesday. Mr. Rubinstein will succeed Ed Colligan, who is stepping down after 16 years with Palm. Apple warns of static shock from iPhone, iPod

22 May 2009 (cnet.com)

iPhone and iPod users may experience a "small and quick" shock via their earbuds due to a buildup of static electricity, Apple warned Monday.

People listening to one of the devices in extremely dry air are most at risk of receiving a static electricity shock through the ear buds, according to a warning posted on Apple’s Web site. The post likened the condition to the discharge that occurs when a person drags his or her feet across a carpet then gets a shock by touching a door knob.

Griffin Navigate In-Line Controller and FM Radio for iPod and iPhone

28 April 2009 (ilounge.com)

Review

For years, Griffin Technology was unquestionably the iPod's most innovative accessory developer, churning out add-ons that regularly redefined what Apple's devices were capable of, and occasionally bypassing Apple's hardware limitations in the process. One of its best add-ons was iFM, the first portable FM radio tuner for iPods, which doubled as an in-line remote control that could be used to change tracks, volume, and play/pause status without using the iPod's integrated controls. Apple subsequently rewarded Griffin's engineering feat by releasing new iPods that lacked the accessory port iFM used, and included new radio tuning software that only Apple's competing accessory, the iPod Radio Remote, was allowed to use. Consequently, iFM all but faded away.

New iPod shuffle first hands-on (with video!)

1 April 2009 (engadget.com)

We just nabbed one of Apple's new button-free iPod shuffles, and in case you were wondering: yes, it's really small. We're gonna play around a bit with the VoiceOver navigation and get you our full impressions in a few, but at first glance we think this is totally usable, especially for the shuffle's sweaty target demographic. Also: it's really small.

Setup

Unboxing wasn't the Apple's best, but it was easy enough to get at all three components in there: the shuffle, the earbuds and the USB adapter. Setup was similarly slightly more complicated than the regular iPod, since in addition to requiring an update to 8.1, it required an installation of VoiceOver -- it all happens quite automatically with a couple clicks of automation, but it's an extra step all the same. The actual formation of VoiceOvers for our tracks and playlists was easy enough that it was actually difficult to even spot iTunes working on it. Since our iTunes library is larger than 4GB, we built a few playlists, set them to sync with the shuffle, clicked sync and were ready to go in seconds. According to Apple, the space used up by the VoiceOvers on the shuffle is "negligible" and doesn't impact that vague "1000 songs" figure.

New iPod shuffle first hands-on (with video!)

Actually, if you're in the middle of listening to a song (past the initial 6 seconds) and want to skip backwards, you'd have to press 3 times, within 6 seconds, press another 3 times. That's 6 times, to skip 1 song. You'd need another 3 presses to skip another song, which makes it a total of 9 button presses for 2 songs. I wonder how long that single button would last.

They should've just made it press 3 times if under the first 6 seconds, press 4 times if beyond the first 6 seconds. But then they might neglect support for skipping backwards at the 6th second mark.

Personally, I don't like the standard way of having to press the back button twice to skip backwards one song, but it's the standard. This is even more work, and just as less desirable.
