How Anti-shoplifting Devices Work

22 July 2009 (howstuffworks.com)

Let's imagine for the moment that you own a large department store, and you are having a big problem with shoplifting. (You're not alone -- retail stores lost $26 billion last year to shoplifting!) What are you going to do? You cannot let it continue, because every month your accounting system tells you that you are losing thousands of dollars to theft. It forces you to raise your prices, and that means you have to charge more than the store next door. That can make it very hard to compete, especially if the store next door is successfully discouraging shoplifting.

$6,910 buys world's best headphone sound

15 July 2009 (news.cnet.com)

Lucky me, I've reviewed most of the world's very best

headphones

, including the Audio Technica ATH-W5000, Denon AH-D7000, and Sennheiser HD 800. But now there's something even better: the Woo Audio WES headphone amplifier ($4,500) and Stax SR-007Mk2 headphone ($2,410). The complete review can be found on the Home Entertainment Web site. Yeah, it's a lot of dough, but the Woo/Stax combo creams the other contenders for world's best

headphone

sound, and the pair goes for less than the price of a world class, high-end camera, like the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III. The camera's great now, but in a couple of years it'll be hopelessly out of date. Great audio is simply a better long-term investment. Stax headphones use a very different operating principle than dynamic headphones (pretty much every headphone from lowly earbuds to full-size

headphones

are dynamic designs). Stax has been making electrostatic headphones since 1960 in Japan, and the company's current flagship model, the SR-007Mk2, is what I'm using with the Woo WES amplifier. The Stax is a big and comfy design.

How HDMI Works

18 June 2009 (howstuffworks.com)

If you've shopped for an HDTV, a PlayStation 3, or an HD-DVD or Blu-ray player, you've probably heard about HDMI. It can seem like just one of many connections on televisions or home-theater receivers. But HDMI is more than a port on the back of a TV (and the often expensive cable that fits inside). It's a set of rules for allowing high-definition electronic devices to communicate.

Sony adds PSP access to PlayStation Network video store, 16 new content partners

3 June 2009 (engadget.com)

Tucked in between the "worst kept secret" PSP Go and motion control demos at its E3 press conference, Sony also revealed new content for the PlayStation Network video service, and the ability to download video directly to the PSP, no PS3 or PC intermediary needed. No word on when to expect the new content exactly, but it will include video from Showtime Networks, Starz, G4 & E!, Summit Entertainment, The Weinstein Company, HDNet & Magnolia Pictures, Anime Network, Media Blasters, Right Stuf's Nozomi Entertainment, Starz Media's Manga Entertainment, Toei Animation, Viz Media, WEP, UFC, TNA and Video Action Sports. Looks like Sony will have easy on the go access to video store content up and running before Microsoft gets its Zune integration act together, but whether that compares to 1080p instant streaming promises remains to be seen (Hint: first one with direct Hulu access wins, we're just saying, guys.) Check out Sony's trailer embedded after the break.

Redesigned PS3 to be Revealed at E3

14 May 2009 (playstationlifestyle.net)

Of course this is just yet another rumor, as there is no official confirmation. But we caught word that Sony is set to not only reveal the PSP Go at E3, but another hardware redesign will be debuted as well. We didn’t get any specifics, but we speculate that it could be one of a couple different options. First off, it very well could be as simple as a white or a silver PS3, to go with the white and silver Dualshock 3’s that have been made available. This makes sense, as most people would want their controllers to match their consoles.

Nintendo DSi torn asunder, sized up against DS Lite's innards

Taking it a step further, we also get to see in finer detail some of the differences between the new hardware and its DS Lite predecessor, including the now smaller 840mAh battery that we hear's been contributing to some shorter play sessions. Chinavision CVFH-N03-4G portable emulator indulges your retro gaming cravings

3 April 2009 (chinavasion.com)

Chinavision's CVFH-N03-4G may not have the catchiest titles, but it does boast an impressive array of emulators to satisfy your on-the-go retro gaming needs -- although we imagine those tiny shoulder buttons would prove irksome after a while. Support includes NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy Advance, SNK Neo-Geo and Capcom arcade systems CPS1 and CPS2 -- sorry, no love for Atari 2600 or Commodore 64, here -- all accessible through a menu that in no way, shape, or form resembles Sony's Xross Media Bar. It also plays MP3, MPEG5, FLAC, WMV, AVI, and a few other audio / video formats, and reportedly can function as an e-book reader with text to speech capabilities -- y'know, just in case there weren't enough entities peeved at it being a beacon for ROMs. As for hardware, we're looking at a 2.8-inch QVGA LCD, 4GB internal memory, a mini-SD card slot, and AV out for the television. Buy one for $87.31, three for $83.82 apiece, or if you're feeling generous, pick up 50 for a more generous, undisclosed discount.

Patients in Therapy, Therapist in Trouble

3 April 2009 (nytimes.com)

People go into therapy to learn from their mistakes, then make mistakes about what they’ve learned. And if viewers have learned anything from the HBO series “In Treatment,” it’s that therapists can also get tangled in half-truths. The show’s second season doesn’t pick up exactly where the first left off; Paul Weston, the psychotherapist played by Gabriel Byrne, has divorced and set up a practice in Brooklyn with new furnishings and a new roster of patients. But the issues he left behind seep into his fresh start: a malpractice suit on top of marital discord on top of childhood grievances.

Bring On The Affordable Green Sports Cars

3 April 2009 (wired.com)

The hybrid revolution is well under way. Honda is rolling out the new Insight, the third-gen Prius is coming and even Ford's got a winner with the Fusion Hybrid. Nice cars one and all, but about as much fun as a root canal. Not one of them is something you'd back out of the garage on a Sunday morning to take for a quick blast up your favorite twisty road. But don't worry. Affordable eco-conscious sports cars are coming, and soon. We were impressed by the Prius, we love the Insight and we're thrilled to see Toyota rising to Honda's low-cost challenge with a Yaris-based hybrid. We're also eager to get behind the wheel of a Fusion hybrid. Cars like these are smart answers to thorny questions about fuel efficiency, oil dependence and CO2 emissions.

Why Sony should add Netflix to the PS3 now

27 march 2009 (cnet.com)

In recent days, rumors have been percolating about the PlayStation 3 getting Netflix streaming video support. Most of the rumors revolve around a survey that Netflix has out gauging user interest in adding its service to Sony's game console for a fee. No one seems to know whether Netflix or Sony commissioned the survey, but either way, it's certainly raised hopes with PS3 owners that they would get something that Xbox 360 owners have had for a while. (For what it's worth, nearly identical rumors of Netflix on the Wii have also been making the rounds.) Interestingly, as the rumors make their way around the blogosphere, Sony's been trying to promote how robust its Playstation Network Service (PSN) is and how great a media extender the PS3 is. A few weeks ago, a few of us from CNET spent some time visiting with Sony PR and marketing reps in a hotel suite going over what PSN had to offer, including Home, Sony's online virtual community that's hit 5 million registered users. And just yesterday, I got a voice mail from a PR rep encouraging me to do a story on what a great media extender the PS3 is.

Electric Cars: Are We Ready or Not?

20 march 2009 (msn.com)

While policymakers and car builders are pushing hard for electric propulsion, gas and diesel vehicles still make up more than 97 percent of new automobiles sold today. Is America ready for cars that run on electricity? The pollsters seem to think so — for years, surveys have found that a majority of drivers in the United States are interested in gas-electric hybrid vehicles. And in a J.D. Power and Associates poll conducted in the summer of 2008, 46 percent of those who responded would consider buying a hybrid, even after being informed that they can cost at least $5,000 more than equivalent gas-burning models. Fewer polls have been conducted for all-electric vehicles (EVs), but the lesson seems clear: Hybrids are in demand, and

electric cars

could be next in line for the national zeitgeist.

TV ratings: Prison documentary locks in 4.2m viewers for ITV

18 march 2009 (guardian.co.uk)

ITV1's new documentary series Holloway about the women's prison beat BBC1 drama Mistresses in the ratings battle with 4.2 million viewers last night, Tuesday 17 March. The first of the three-part series averaged an 18% share in the 9pm hour compared with Mistresses' 3.8 million and a 17% share. Mistresses was also beaten by Channel Five's US import CSI, which averaged 3.9 million and a 17% share and was easily the channel's best performing show of the night. The strong figures for CSI were due to the departure of investigator Gil Grissom, played by William Petersen, who had been with the series since the first episode aired in the US on CBS in 2000. Also in the 9pm hour Heston's Tudor Feast on Channel 4 averaged 2.3 million, a 10% share, with 300,000 watching on catch-up service Channel 4+1 an hour later. At the same time on BBC2 a Horizon documentary about child education and fronted by David Baddiel averaged 1.3 million and a 6% share.

We just purchased this machine about a week ago for use in our small Real Estate Office, and find that it handles faxes several times faster than its predecessor. Both input and output are great, and the clarity of the copies are sooo much better.

The Two Types of MP3 Players

MP3 players are still a popular way to listen to your favourite music. But you need to know the difference between the two types before you can choose one. Many people enjoy using an MP3 player to listen to their favourite music while they are out and about doing other things such as jogging, walking or even lazing on the beach. There are two types of MP3 player and which you choose may depend on your passion for music. The two types are solid state and hard disk.

Solid State MP3 A solid state MP3 has no moving parts. It is the smaller of the two types, making it great for carrying around, especially if you are jogging or exercising. However, it will not store as many songs as the hard disk MP3. But the rechargeable battery will last longer than the hard disk type with around 21 hours of playing time.

Hard Disk MP3 These are large capacity players that store music on a hard disk like a computer has.

How Capacitors Work

Inside the capacitor, the terminals connect to two metal plates separated by a non-conducting substance, or dielectric. You can easily make a capacitor from two pieces of aluminum foil and a piece of paper. It won't be a particularly good capacitor in terms of its storage capacity, but it will work.

In theory, the dielectric can be any non-conductive substance. However, for practical applications, specific materials are used that best suit the capacitor's function. Mica, ceramic, cellulose, porcelain, Mylar, Teflon and even air are some of the non-conductive materials used. The dielectric dictates what kind of capacitor it is and for what it is best suited. Depending on the size and type of dielectric, some capacitors are better for high frequency uses, while some are better for high voltage applications. Capacitors can be manufactured to serve any purpose, from the smallest plastic capacitor in your calculator, to an ultra capacitor that can power a commuter bus.

When old electronics meet their end

Inside computers and other electronics are gold, copper and other reusable precious metals. This makes the 90 percent of discarded electronics not recycled a viable enterprise for people looking to extract those precious metals. However, many of these "electronics harvesters" use simple and environmentally unfriendly processes to get the metals out, such as putting the machines through acid baths.

The result is that lead, mercury and other chemicals are released into the atmosphere – through toxic gasses – and put into lakes and rivers through wastewater systems. The harvesters are burning the plastic cases, melting lead-based monitor glass and simply tossing out the undesirable by-products of precious metal extraction.

Circuit Breaker Types

Circuit breakers have an in-built fixed electric current load capacity which when breached causes automatic circuit shutdown. It basically detects the fault condition like a short circuit or overload in the circuit, interrupts the continuity, and immediately stops the current flow. This safety feature makes circuit breaker installation an essential part in an electrical circuit. Overloading in an electrical circuit occurs when the wires are forced to carry and conduct an electric charge more than their capacity. This causes the wires to heat up and results in insulation breakdown and an electrical fire. Short circuit occurs when two points in the circuit having different potential difference accidentally come in contact. This causes unwanted current flow from one node to another which may result in excessive heating, circuit damage, explosion or even fire. Therefore, circuit breakers are used to protect the circuit from unwanted consequences of wire overloading and accidental short cir

PSP access to PlayStation Network

This is great to hear and I am glad that it will be a native app for the PSP.

I would love to see the PC Store make it’s way back. I very much liked being able to browse the PlayStation store from any location without being restricted to a PC client. It would also be nice to queue up downloads to my PSP or PS3. I am not always available in a wifi area and I would like to queue up content that starts downloading when I boot up the PS3, or connect the PSP to my PC.

Sony adds PSP access to PlayStation Network

“Sony’s” been saying that they’ll bring the movie download service to Europe this year, but nothing was mentioned at E3. Hell, Microsoft came out of the blue and announced theirs which will be available here in Finland as well.

But considering the incredibly idiotic pricing, it’s probably cheaper to rent movies from a store anyway.
