Embarrassing security leaks prompt bill to clamp down on government P2P use

20th November 2009 (scientificamerican.com)

Peer-to-peer (P2P) networking has emerged as a vastly popular way for computer users to democratize the transfer of information, allowing faster and easier sharing of images, documents and other files without the need for a centralized server. Unfortunately, and ironically, P2P is a little too democratic for the U.S. government, which has been victimized several times by the public disclosure of sensitive documents via file-sharing networks.

10 Types of Computers

7 August 2009 (howstuffworks.com)

There are a lot of terms used to describe

computers

. Most of these words imply the size, expected use or capability of the

computer

. While the term computer can apply to virtually any device that has a microprocessor in it, most people think of a

computer

as a device that receives input from the user through a mouse or keyboard, processes it in some fashion and displays the result on a screen.

Microsoft's Linux contribution: Thank Novell?

22 July 2009 (cnet.com)

Microsoft's move to offer several Linux drivers owes a lot to a key programmer at Novell.
Linux veteran--and Novell fellow--Greg Kroah-Hartman suggested to Microsoft about four months ago that the company release the three drivers to be part of Linux under the GNU General Public License (GPL) terms that govern Linux code. Kroah-Hartman, who helps oversee the inclusion of drivers into Linux, said he worked within his company to find the right contacts at Microsoft.

The Army has already moved 44,000 of its 744,000 desktops to Vista and is making the move to bolster security, according to an Army News Service article.

EU slaps a record fine on Intel

14 May 2009 (news.bbc.co.uk)

Computer

chipmaker Intel has been fined a record 1.06bn euros ($1.45bn; £948m) by the European Commission for anti-competitive practices. It dwarfs the 497m euro fine levied on Microsoft in 2004 for abusing its dominant market position. The Commission found that between 2002 and 2007, Intel had paid manufacturers and a retailer to favour its chips over those of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). Intel has announced that it will appeal against the verdict. Intel's senior vice president Bruce Sewell told BBC Five Live that Intel contested the findings and was seeking a chance to "clear our name and exonerate the company." He denied "categorically" that it had paid manufacturers to favour its products over those of rivals. "We would never pay for any kind of obligation," Mr Sewell said. "We provide incentives to customers to buy our products." He added that there had been no harm to customers and that prices in the microprocessor market had fallen sharply in recent years. The fine was welcomed by AMD, which had lodged complaints in 2000, 2003 and 2006.

Google’s Strength May Be Part of Microsoft Defense Strategy

8 May 2009 (nytimes.com)

BERLIN — Microsoft will argue against a European Commission proposal that it promote competing browsers in its

Windows operating system

on the ground that such a move would strengthen its rival Google’s dominance in the global search-advertising market, according to a person with direct knowledge of Microsoft’s legal defense.

The company will make the argument at a June hearing in Brussels as part of an antitrust inquiry about the packaging of its Internet Explorer browser with Windows, which powers more than 90 percent of the world’s personal computers.

The person with knowledge of Microsoft’s legal strategy, who declined to be named because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the case, said that Microsoft would outline what it saw as the damaging effects to the search-advertising industry of incorporating competing browsers — like Firefox from Mozilla or Chrome from Google — into Windows.

Why Facebook Shut Down the Only Useful App it Ever Had

8 May 2009 (webmonkey.com)

Facebook has shut down the single most useful application ever to grace its tightly restricted platform. The Newsfeed RSS app was built using the recently unveiled Open Stream API, a set of tools developers can use to build apps that let users read, interact with and write to their Facebook stream.

Newsfeed RSS took advantage of the newly “open” stream to deliver virtually all your Facebook activity as a stand-alone RSS feed. Instead of just status updates, Newsfeed RSS offered, well, your whole activity stream as well as anything your friends posted. In short, it made Facebook work like the rest of the web by offering a real feed.

Unfortunately, that goes against the basic closed-world mentality of Facebook. According to the restrictions in the new Open Stream API, applications can not cache or otherwise store data. What this means is, according to Facebook, the simple act of keeping track of your friends through RSS is a violation of their privacy.

Google, Universal to Launch Music Hub 'Vevo'

10 April 2009 (wired.com)

Vevo will launch later this year, a collaboration between Universal Music Group and Google the partners expect to be the leading music video service in the world from day one. Google confirmed to Wired.com Thursday that all of Universal Music Group's video assets (music videos, interviews, concert footage and possibly Kyte-style backstage video) will live on Vevo, and that YouTube — and eventually, AOL, MTV and Yahoo — will embed Universal's videos from Vevo rather than licensing the content directly from the labels. Although terms of the deal were not disclosed, Google's licensing worries with Universal are over. The label will be satisfied with its share of revenue from Vevo, YouTube and wherever else these videos end up — plus the control it will have over the Vevo service. In the end, this is another in a string of deals in which major labels have sued a social media network, settled, licensed, then gained equity in the service (imeem, MySpace and now YouTube).

Hackers reportedly have embedded code in power grid

10 April 2009 (cnn.com)

Computer hackers have embedded software in the United States' electricity grid and other infrastructure that could potentially disrupt service or damage equipment, two former federal officials told CNN. The code in the power grid was discovered in 2006 or 2007, according to one of the officials, who called it "the 21st century version of Cold War spying." Department of Homeland Security Director Janet Napolitano would not confirm such a breach, but said Wednesday that there has been no known damage caused by one.

iTunes Store now infected with variable pricing, Amazon still $0.99

8 April 2009 (engadget.com)

As promised, variable pricing has now been implemented at the iTunes music store. Already, we're seeing most of the top 10 singles and 33 of the top 100 hitting the top price-point of $1.29 (encoded as DRM-free 256kbps AAC). Interesting as Amazon's uncomfortably similar top 10 list has all these tracks priced at $0.99 (encoded as DRM-free 256kbps VBR MP3). A handful of tracks (nine in the top 100) do hit the higher $1.29 price further down Amazon's list. Now, if you believe Steve (someone who originally postured against this price structure), then it appears that the music labels are charging Apple more for the rights to sell its music than Amazon based on this quote attributed to Jobs in the Apple press release from January:

Angry British villagers block Google Street View car, incident captured on CCTV

3 April 2009 (bbc.co.uk)

Look we understand demands for privacy. We just find it ironic that citizens of Broughton (pronunciation: bak-wərd), a small village in a nation where CCTV cameras look, evaluate behavior, and sometimes speak at virtually every intersection, would block a Google Street View car on grounds of invasion of privacy. Seems to us that they've given up on that right a long, long time ago. Though the police were called, the villagers eventually let Google's contractor pass peacefuly -- presumably after assurances were given that cameras can not, in fact, steal your soul.

Twitter Search Engine Aims to Reel You in to Your Own Page

3 April 2009 (wired.com)

Twitter has a big step closer to incorporating real-time search on individual user pages, a bid to keep and hold eyeballs on member sites already serving up a limited variety of ads. While not specifically touted as part of a business plan this is a design challenge aimed at making your Twitter home sticky — for you. User pages are dull and can't be easily customized, and there are no shortage of ways to be on Twitter and avoid your own Twitter page. So, well-implemented search is a clever way of bringing users home as Twitter experiments with ads by placing a small unit right below your profile and stats.

Stylish, Touchscreen 'Kitchen PCs' Set to Grab Consumers

1 April 2009 (wired.com)

Forget leaving notes on the fridge or carrying a

laptop

to the kitchen as you attempt to make scallops for dinner. PC makers are betting that consumers will spring for a sleek, new touchscreen

desktop

instead — a machine perfect for web surfing, leaving notes and checking internet videos. Four major PC makers including Dell, HP, Asus and now MSI have launched 'kitchen PCs' — inexpensive all-in-one systems with touchscreens instead of keyboards. MSI Wind, a Taiwanese manufacturer better known for its netbooks, became the latest entrant to a new category with its 19-inch touchscreen PC on Tuesday called the Wind Top AE 1900. Pricing and availability weren't disclosed.

Should you donate or recycle that old PC?

31 march 2009 (cnet.com)

Not every

computer

user turns his or her attic into a graveyard for outdated, useless PCs the way I do, as I described in a post last week on the safe and sane way to dispose of an old hard drive. But before you don the goggles and break out the power tools, consider whether there isn't some mileage left in the drive, as well as in the PC you removed it from. It has never been easier to find a nonprofit willing to sanitize and refurbish old

computers

. However, if the system has indeed chomped its last bit, there are plenty of organizations that will ensure that it's disposed of responsibly, including the device's original vendor, in many cases.

Microsoft closing the book on Encarta

31 march 2009 (cnet.com)

Microsoft has quietly confirmed that it is getting out of the encyclopedia business, ending its long-standing Encarta product. As noted by Ars Technica, the software maker says it will discontinue all its online Encarta products by October, with the exception of Encarta Japan, which will run through the end of the year. It will also stop selling Microsoft Student and Encarta Premium, paid software products that included the online encyclopedia. In a posting on its Web site, Microsoft said that the move reflected the change in the way people use reference material. It didn't mention Wikipedia by name, but I think we all know the biggest change to encyclopedias to come around in recent memory.

Ancient Instrument Revived by Computing

20 march 2009 (discovery.com)

Powerful grid computing has revived a stringed musical instrument that was last played in ancient Greece, Italian researchers announced at a recent conference in Catania, Sicily. Called an epigonion after the 6th century B.C. musician Epigonus of Ambracia, the instrument was somewhat similar to a modern harp. No complete example of an epigonion has survived, yet it is known the instrument had 40 strings of varying lengths and a soundboard, like a guitar. Its strings were plucked with fingers Using data from various sources, including images in artwork, fragments from excavations and written descriptions, researchers of the Ancient Instruments Sound/Timbre Reconstruction Application, or ASTRA, project succeeded in developing a 3D mechanical computer model of the instrument.

Security Tool is definitely a rogue anti-spyware tool that usually performs fake system scan and displays various false infections. Security Tool may access the system without user’s knowledge and permission, and is usually installed via Trojan viruses. Security Tool program is not going to clean your computer from spyware as it claims but might actually expose you to more security threats.

Once installed and running, Security Tool will scan your computer, display a variety of infections, and constantly barrage you with nag screens and fake security warnings about problems on your computer. This fake program may display warning to you that your computer has no protection and recommends that you purchase Security Tool. All the despicable actions of Security Tool are in the attempts to promote users to purchase its useless full version.

3D computer graphics

3D computer graphics (in contrast to 2D computer graphics) are graphics that utilize a three-dimensional representation of geometric data that is stored in the computer for the purposes of performing calculations and rendering 2D images.

Despite these differences, 3D computer graphics rely on many of the same algorithms as 2D computer vector graphics in the wire frame model and 2D computer raster graphics in the final rendered display.

n computer graphics software, the distinction between 2D and 3D is occasionally blurred; 2D applications may use 3D techniques to achieve effects such as lighting, and primarily 3D may use 2D rendering techniques.
