Sotirio watch by Bulgari
10 June 2009 (gqmagazine.co.uk)
As you read this, the world's largest watch jamboree will have come to an end for another year. If anyone doubts that timepieces are big
business, just take him to Basel and show him the might of the Swiss watch industry at its annual get-together in the city's gargantuan convention centre. Believe me, it's impressive. Almost every big name in the game is there from Rolex and Patek Philippe down. And some of the names above the stands are rather surprising - it seems that, as with
fragrance and
sunglasses, everyone wants a piece of this brand-extension cake. There is even a Donald Trump line.

Neutrano's Nutec WristFone watch phones at CTIA
3 April 2009 (engadget.com)
If this guy looks serious, it's because he is -- serious about bringing you some awesome watch phones. Canadian firm Neutrano is working with Chinese OEMs to import, tweak, and certify some of those watch phones that we've unfortunately been spending more time reading about than actually using -- and while they aren't going to appeal to everyone, the stainless steel version is the closest thing we've seen to something we'd consider wearing this side of an LG. Fans of chunky, stylish wristwatches should be able to pass it off as a fashion statement of sorts -- your friends don't even have to know it's a phone, really.

Video: OTAS camera watch for tardy office pervs
27 march 2009 (engadget.com)
We're not saying that this ¥9,980 ($100) OTAS watch with built-in pinhole-sized video camera and 8GB of flash memory can't be used for constructive endeavors. Hell, maybe you'll use it to ferret out corruption at the highest levels of government. Maybe the 80 minute, 352 x 288 pixel video you shoot provides the irrefutable evidence needed to put away a hardened criminal. We're just saying we doubt it. Video sample and more pics after the break.

Government warns of terrorist threat from watches
18 march 2009 (msn.com)
Somehow we doubt this is the kind of endorsement Casio wants, but apparently the folks at al-Qaeda have taken a liking to the company's watches, particularly those with a built-in altimeter. According to an advisory from the Department of Homeland Security, Casios have been used by al-Qaeda as timers for explosives, and are favored for their "worldwide availability and inexpensive price." Homeland Security has also warned that terrorists might have a fondness for watches with built-in cigarette lighters, which are available for under $10. Though both lighter-watches and Casios are currently allowed on planes, airport screeners have been advised to be on the lookout for them. Which means you'd better get ready to take off your watch right after you hand over your
shoes.
